National Public Health Week 2017 is kicking off locally with a health and wellness fair on Saturday, April 8 at City Hall, 401 N. Morton Street, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This free public event is sponsored by the City of Bloomington Community and Family Resources Department.

IU Health Public Health Nursing Clinic will provide blood pressure, blood sugar (A1C), and a total lipid panel. A lipid panel is a blood test that measures lipids-fats and fatty substances used as a source of energy by your body. Lipids include cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL, good cholesterol) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL, bad cholesterol). The lipid panel is a fasting blood test. Those planning to participate in the lipid panel testing should consume no food or drink for 9-12 hours prior to testing (water consumption is permitted). IU Health Public Health Nurses will provide all screening tests.

Additionally, approximately 25 public health exhibitors will provide education to the community about their programs and services, including:

  • Dr. Brandon Osmon: spinal screenings

  • IU School of Optometry: vision screenings

  • Centerstone: depression screenings

  • Bloomington Community Massage: chair massages

  • Back and Neck Pain Relief Center: spinal health checks

Also during the health and wellness fair, Bloomington High School South will sponsor a blood drive on the Red Cross bus from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Donating one pint of blood can save up to three lives.

No appointments are necessary for the blood drive and health screenings, and there is no cost for the health and wellness fair or any of the related screenings.
