We would like to welcome the IU students back to Bloomington. We wish you a safe, educational and enjoyable school year. The information compiled on this page is designed to provide you with answers on what to do in an emergency and how to prepare ahead of time. Bloomington Fire Department provides fire protection and first response EMS care to the City of Bloomington, IU Campus, Salt Creek Township and Polk Township. In the event of any emergency you should call 911 immediately. Time is extremely important in making sure the situation is taken care of quickly.

One of the most common questions we get is "can we have a bonfire or campfire"? The answer to this question is no. The City of Bloomington has an open burning ordinance in place that restricts open fires to be used for cooking purposes only. The fire used for cooking must be in a grill or pit with a grate over the top and must be extinguished as soon as the cooking is complete. BFD responds to any complaint we receive and will extinguish any fire that doesn't meet these guidelines.

Never hesitate to contact us should you have questions or concerns. Our main goal is to provide you with a safe environment. For all non-emergency questions you may contact our administrative office at 812-332-9763 8am-5pm, M-F. For ALL emergencies please call 911 immediately.
