Commission on the Status of Children and Youth

The purpose of the Commission shall be to promote connections in our community that empower, enhance, and nurture children and youth. The Commission will access resources and information to make recommendations to people and organizations with authority to create and support systems that encourage healthy development of children and youth.

The Commission on the Status of Children and Youth holds meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall at Showers, 401 N. Morton Street, Bloomington, Hooker Conference Room, Suite 245.

QUALIFICATIONS: Members should be representative of low-income, community, and social services for children and youth service providers.

Read for the Record - Tuesday, November 10 

• The Commission on the Status of Children and Youth hosts Jumpstart's Read for the Record campaign locally. Read for the Record represents a powerful, turnkey opportunity to celebrate literacy, foster a love of reading, and support our district’s early childhood literacy goals. Read for the Record is a global campaign that brings together millions of children and adults on a single day to read the same high-quality children's book.

• This year's Read for the Record selected book is Brave Like a Lion! How a Puppeteer Found Her Voice, by Megan Piphus.  Megan is the first full-time Black woman puppeteer on Sesame Street. The story is about a shy girl who finds her voice. A message about courage, confidence, and finding your voice that resonates far beyond the page.

  • Celebrity Readers are assigned to a local Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) School and classroom to read to. The time commitment is about 1 hour and is during the school day. All Celebrity Readers must complete or have on file an approved 2026 MCCSC Background Check Form to participate.
