National Society of Arts and Letters Day


WHEREAS, the National Society of Arts and Letters is dedicated to finding and encouraging young artists in dance, drama, literature, music, musical theatre and the visual arts. Annual competitions are held in these six disciplines to further promote the Society's mission; and

since it was founded in 1944, the Society has grown to include 23 chapters in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the Bloomington, Indiana chapter was established in 1966 and continues to be an excellent source of professional opportunity and encouragement for young artists through annual competitions. This year, the Bloomington chapter will award more than $22,000 to the winners of the voice competition; and

during the last four decades, many winners of the Society's national and local competitions have excelled in their chosen fields including actor Dale Benson, painter Anne Parker Diggory, pianist Malcolm Frager and dancer Mimi Paul.

Past award winners in the Bloomington chapter music competitions have included Angela Brown, Lawrence Brownlee, Kyle Kettelsen, Kate Lindsay and DaXun Zhang; and


the City of Bloomington is truly honored to host the Society's 2008 National Convention and Voice Competition May 13-18; and


Bloomington welcomes these extraordinarily gifted young artists, judges, friends and family members. May your stay here be memorable and enjoyable.
