Safe Routes to School
Monroe County Safe Routes to School Task Force
The Monroe County Safe Routes to School Task Force was formed in January, 2006 and is comprised of members of the community who represent the five "E"s of a successful Safe Routes to School Program: education, enforcement, engineering, encouragement, and evaluation. The Task Force, made up of government and school officials, the health community, parents, and interested citizens, works to achieve goals within its vision statement:
To improve the health and safety of the community's school children by:
- Increasing alternative transportation options and reducing vehicular traffic around schools;
- Encouraging physical activity among children and families;
- Creating sustainable lifelong transportation habits through education and opportunity;
- Facilitating neighborhood cohesion and involvement in safe routes to school initiatives; and
- Promoting the efficient use of community resources to accomplish these goal.
The Task Force has been instrumental in helping procure funding from the State of Indiana's Safe Routes to School program. The grants received to date are:
- Batchelor Middle School Infrastructure Project (2006) = $60,000
- Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) Non-Infrastucture Project (2006) = $53,500
- Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation (RBBCSC) Non-Infrastructure Project (2006) = $23,000
- Edgewood Campus Infrastructure Project (2007) = $250,000
- Templeton Elementary Infrastrucutre Project (2007) = $250,000
- Joint MCCSC/RBBCSC Non-Infrastructure Project (2007) = $75,000
