VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Boys and Girls Club Auxiliary

Since 1968 the Boys' and Girls' Club Auxiliary has functioned as a voluntary organization adjunct to the paid professional staff and provided financial assistance for the basic needs of children and offered opportunities for personal and developmental growth that will cultivate citizenship. Its 40 members commit to giving five years of active volunteerism.

Throughout the year, the Auxiliary plans and implements an established program of events and community service activities. Its members also sponsor and lead monthly special events like sports clinics and holiday activities, giving children fun and safe outlets for social development.

Through these volunteer-run events, including the annual and beloved Strawberry Shortcake Festival on the Courthouse Square, more than $40,000 is raised. "The Auxiliary's tradition of service to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington is impeccable and exhaustive," Chris Tann, the Club's Unit Director exclaims. "Their attention to detail ensures that the involvement of their volunteers makes targeted and measurable impact."

BGC Members During holidays, Auxiliary members sponsor families by donating gifts. In 2012, more than 100 Boys' & Girls' Club families requested help with gifts for their children. Auxiliary responded by giving to ensure that no one who asked went without having their gift list filled.

Children of Bloomington's neediest families benefit directly from the Auxiliary's involvement. The services and activities provided make it possible for all families to have low-cost ($20 or less per year) and high quality after school and summer child care options.

"The Auxiliary's tradition and work extends throughout our community," Tann says. "Their giving and volunteerism has met countless needs and has consistently provided for those in our community who have a need to serve."
