Commission on Aging Initiatives and Events

Bloomington is known for being both an arts destination as well as a retirement destination. Thus, the City of Bloomington's Commission on Aging seeks to enhance these two positive attributes by launching a Creative Aging Initiative.

About the Initiative

Modeled after Ireland's National Bealtaine Festival (, the Creative Aging Initiative is not a single event, but instead a series of community events held during the entire month of May, which is nationally recognized as "Older Americans Month." To launch the initiative the City of Bloomington Commission on Aging invite community arts organizations, faith-based organizations, neighborhoods, municipalities, local business, etc. to:

In celebration of Older Americans Month, the City of Bloomington Commission on Aging invites the community to celebrate creativity and our aging population through its sixth annual Creative Aging Festival in May 2016.

The primary objectives of the Creative Aging Festival are to highlight the artistic talents of older adults; promote intergenerational understanding through dialogue, sharing traditions, and storytelling; and increase awareness about the value of creative engagement to adult health and well being.

The Creative Aging Festival program guide features creative aging events and exhibits in May. Printed program guides will be distributed through area arts and aging venues in April.

ER Preparedness for Older Adults:

The Commission on Aging is working with community partners such as TRIAD and COAD to raise the awareness of older adults of the importance of preparing for emergencies. Emergency Preparedness starter kits were made by area Girl Scouts for Area 10 Agency on Aging clients. For more information contact the Commission.
