Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Commission Announces Local-Motion Grant Recipients

Bloomington, Ind. - The Bloomington Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Commission (BPSC) is pleased to announce that three projects have received funding through the Local-Motion Grant Program. In all, the BPSC received six letters of intent from groups interested in seeking a total of $3,000 that was made available through the grant program.

The City of Bloomington and the Bloomington Bicycle Club both provided $1,500 for the inaugural 2014 grant cycle. The grant program is open to individuals, teams, local businesses and nonprofit organizations (including neighborhood groups) wanting to advance bicycle and/or pedestrian mobility for area residents.

The Commission's review process resulted in the submission of four Local-Motion grant applications. Mitch Rice, chair of the BPSC, was pleased with the variety and scope of the applications, "Fortunately, with the additional support from the Bloomington Bicycle Club, the BPSC is able to award and support three grant requests, which we hope will result in positive returns that far outweigh these investments."

The following three organizations received the highest ranking and were granted funding during this year's grant round:

Middle Way House: $1,500 to fund a bike share program for Middle Way House residents

Bloomington Bicycle Project and Friends: $900 for a Winter Cycling Fellowship Program

Buskirk-Chumley Theater/BTC Management Inc: $600 for "Bloomington Cycles," a one day celebration.

The Local-Motion Grant Program is another effort by the City to improve the mobility of its citizens and reach a platinum level Bicycle Friendly Community designation by the League of American Bicyclists in 2016. The next cycle of applications for the Local-Motion Grant Program will be announced in the Spring 2015.
