Bloomington Police Department Accepting Applications for First Teen Police Academy

Bloomington, Ind. - The Bloomington Police Department (BPD) has developed a Teen Police Academy and will be conducting the first class this summer. The program is designed to introduce teenagers ages 13-17 to general law enforcement duties and, more specifically, the operations of the Bloomington Police Department. The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31, at the Public Safety Training Center, 3230 S. Walnut St.

Transportation to and from the facility will be the responsibility of the participant. Daily class activities will include lectures, demonstrations and interactive opportunities designed to entertain, engage and instruct participants. The course will be taught by members of BPD and will include officers with over 25 years of experience, as well as newer officers who have just completed training.

Topics to be covered include:

"This program is very similar to the Citizen's Police Academy, which always receives positive reviews. We see this program as a good way to interact with the youth of the community by teaching them about law enforcement, and it could end up being an excellent recruiting tool for those who have an interest in becoming future officers with the Bloomington Police Department," said Chief Michael Diekhoff.

The Teen Police Academy will be limited to 48 students. The registration and information packet can be picked up at the Bloomington Police Department located at 220 E. Third St. The deadline for registration is Friday, July 3.

For more information about agendas, applications or the Release of Liability for applicants, visit BPD's website. Questions regarding the Teen Police Academy can be directed to Lt. Steven Kellams at the Bloomington Police Department at 812.339.4477 or kellamss@bloomington.in.gov.
