2001 Bloomington Historical Survey
Approximately every ten years, the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology and the Bloomington Historic Preservation Commission partner to review and update a survey of historic sites and structures within the city limits. In 1998, the city began this re-survey of its historic resources. All the buildings were individually photographed, described and evaluated according to their historic and architectural significance. This list of properties replaces the 1986 Bloomington Historic Sites and Structures Inventory and includes a total of 2556 sites, 22 districts and 192 scattered sites. Eight new districts were created as a result of the new survey. Many more categories of interest were opened with this survey including a large number of 20th century revival style homes in the southeast quadrant of the city, as well as the numerous catalogue homes in formerly working class areas. This survey was intended to be a comprehensive look at the city's historic resources.
For a property to appear in the survey it must be at least 50 years old, possess integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association and meet one of the following criteria:
-
be associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history; or
-
be associated with the lives of persons significant in our past; or embody the distinctive characteristics of a type; period, or method of construction, or that represent the work of a master, or that possess high artistic values, or that represent a significant and distinguishable entity whose components may lack individual distinction; or
-
have yielded, or may be likely to yield, information important in prehistory or history
