Learn About Tenant Rights, Safety, and Financial Wellness at HAND’s Free Renting Class

The City of Bloomington’s Department of Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND) will offer R101: Renting in Bloomington, on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Dogwood Room of the Indiana Memorial Union, 900 E. 7th St. Preregistration is encouraged.

This class is co-sponsored by HAND, IU Student Legal Services, and IU MoneySmarts, in partnership with the Monroe County Apartment Association. Speakers will include staff from each of these organizations, as well as those from other City departments. Free and open to the public, this class is designed to educate Bloomington renters about topics such as:
 

  • Tenant and landlord rights and responsibilities
  • Understanding the leasing process
  • How and when to seek help through HAND’s Residential Rental Inspection Program
  • Financial wellness
  • Being a good neighbor
  • Home and personal safety

Several local property management companies are offering discounts to individuals who complete the class and subsequently sign a lease with them. A list of companies and the discounts on offer is available at the R101 website.
