Adopting Companion Animals
Thank you for considering adoption! This section is designed to help you in your search for a canine or feline best friend. It includes our adoption policies, an adoption application you can download and send to us, the schedule for our weekly television show, "Pets Without Partners," and provides links to the Petfinder website that features our companion animals available for adoption.
Adoption Policies & Procedures
Our goal is to facilitate the best match for you and your new canine or feline best friend. During the adoption counseling process we will ask questions about your lifestyle, your previous animal experience and your expectations for a new pet in order to try to help you find the animal of your dreams.
You can view adoptable animals on the PetFinder website link below, here at the shelter or at one of our offsite adoption events. Once you find an animal that you are interested in adopting, you will be asked to complete a survey/application. Additionally, should the need arise, we reserve the right to verify veterinary records, contact property managers/landlords, and perform yard inspections.
Please note that, with rare exception, we do not approve applications for cats and dogs who will be living exclusively outdoors. Nor do we adopt to those looking exclusively for barn cats/mousers, hunting or guard dogs.

- NEW!!! Senior to Senior Adoption Program: Senior citizens 60 years of age or older can adopt a senior animal 5 years of age or older for half price - $27.50!
We accept Cash, Check, Debit and Credit Cards (Visa and MasterCards).
These fees include the following services:
- A first round of vaccinations, including de-worming
- Feline Leukemia/FIV testing for cats
- Heartworm testing for dogs
- A free office visit with any veterinarian in Monroe County
- Microchip identification for both dogs and cats
- Spay/Neuter surgery for both cats and dogs
- A temporary cat carrier
We provide these services because:
- Surgical sterilization (spaying and neutering) is essential to reducing companion animal over-population, which is endemic in the United States. Some four to six million adoptable, healthy companion animals are needlessly euthanized because there are simply not enough homes for them all. Moreover, spaying and neutering significantly reduces sex-related cancers, reduces aggression, roaming, and fighting, and makes them more companionable.
- Microchipping is the most effective way to identify your companion animal should they go missing. While collars and tags can be removed, a microchip is a permanent identification.
- Heartworm is a wide-spread and serious disease transmitted by mosquitos. If left untreated, it can result in a needless death. "Needless" because it is preventable. There are a number of preventatives that, when used consistently, can ensure the health of your dog.
- Feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) are leading causes of illness and death in cats. Both viruses are easily spread among infected cats, and testing is important for all cats, but especially for those entering homes in which other cats reside.
