Mission
Promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, & cooperation - One individual, one community at a time.
- Sister Cities International (SCI) isa nonprofit diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between U.S. and international communities to increase global cooperation at the local level.
- SCI officially certifies, represents, and supports partnerships between U.S. cities, counties, states, and similar jurisdictions in other countries to promote sustainable development, youth involvement, cultural understanding, and humanitarian assistance.
- SCI represents more than 2,500 communities in 134 countries around the world.
History
Sister city, county and state affiliations began after World War II, and were developed into a national initiative by President Eisenhower, who proposed a people-to-people program at the White House in 1956. Originally part of the National League of Cities, Sister Cities International (SCI) became a separate nonprofit organization in 1967 due to its growth in popularity.
Bloomington currently has three sister cities:
- Posoltega, Nicaragua: Since 1988 www.bloomington.in.us/~sci-pos
- Santa Clara, Cuba: Since 1999 www.cubamistad.wordpress.com
- LuChou Province, Taiwán: Limited Activity
