Housing is a basic need. Its quality - or lack thereof - can have a significant impact on social aspects of sustainability. Housing also plays a critical role in the local economy, the natural environment, and the well-being of community residents of all backgrounds and incomes.

Many city departments are responsible for housing issues. Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND) addresses many of the social and economic aspects of housing. For more information see the Consolidated Plan 2010-2014. The City Planning Department also has a significant impact on housing in its review of development plans and enforcement of codes.

The Bloomington Commission on Sustainability and the Environmental Commission track the following data relevant to housing in the Indicator section. One target has been identified to help meet the City's goals presented in the Unified Development Ordinance.
