Over the last year, the City's Animal Control Commission has been working on suggested revisions to the City animal ordinance contained in Title 7 of the Bloomington Municipal Code. A draft of the revised ordinance has been completed and we would like to invite you to review that draft and give you an opportunity to comment on the proposed revisions.

The draft of revisions may be viewed here:

To summarize, the major changes to the ordinance are related to the following topics:

· New definitions for potentially dangerous and vicious animal declarations and the requirements for keeping an animal that has been declared;

· New requirements for tethering a dog;

· A new section that defines when an owner can be declared a habitual offender and the consequences for such; and

· Revisions to language related to rabies quarantine in compliance with state law.

The Animal Control Commission invites you to attend its December 16, 2014 meeting to provide any comments or suggestions and to answer any questions you might have. The meeting is at 5:30 pm in the McClosky Room at City Hall. The proposed ordinance revisions are tentatively scheduled to be brought to the City Council for public hearings in early 2015.

If you have any questions, you can reach me at 812-349-3870.

Sincerely,

Laurie Ringquist

Director
