Sustainable Development
The approach to sustainable development at the City of Bloomington coincides with our Economic Development mission. Beyond traditional economic development that attracts new employment opportunities or helps business retain and expand its employment base, the City of Bloomington looks at nontraditional means of economic development through the arts and the local environment. This alternative approach likens quality of life to economic development in the sense that the better the quality of life, the more likely Bloomington will attract new business and retain and expand current businesses.
As sustainable development has long been associated with maintaining present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, sustainable development means preserving the environment, expanding economic opportunities and providing social equity to the citizenry. The City of Bloomington applies this concept when planning for the economic development needs of the community.
