See tix 187165. Local merchants don’t flood the community with criminals, mental health patients, and drug users that are responsible these carts being abandoned all over town…the city does!! Like all the other issues in this town, local government passes the blame on others (property owners)….hard working tax paying citizens and employers! Stop accepting state money for rehabilitation of all the states delinquents! I highly advocate for people to lawyer up take action against this city with answers like that!!!!
Between the dog park in switchyard and tapp street on both side of the b-line there is nothing but homeless camps. Several had active fires when I was walking by. There are 30-40 stolen shopping carts and dozens if not hundreds of bicycles and bicycle parts. There is trash everywhere including the creek bed. I can only assume there is feces, drugs, and needles leaching into the ground and nearby ground streams. This has progressively gotten worse over the years. I’m praying the new administration does something about this problem not only here but all throughout town!

We live just a few blocks north of Bryan Park. At 4:09AM Saturday, Jan 15 my family was woken to what sounded like 8 gunshots, followed by two more a few minutes later. These noises sounded like they originated only a couple blocks south. Then there were 2 more shots (much fainter) at about 4:19AM. I never heard any sirens. Anyone have any insight into this occurrence? What is going to be done about the current state of affairs in regards to violence and drugs in the city of Bloomington? My wife and I have been increasingly concerned with the general state of "health" in Bloomington for the last few years. We have had random weapon-bearing tweekers and would-be thieves wander/stumble into our yards and onto our porches, we have had packages stolen from porches and mailboxes, we have had items stolen from our vehicles and property. My wife even witnessed a man masturbating in public! We now have cameras set up on our property to monitor 24/7 and I have a baseball bat next to my bed that I have already had to use once to run off a potential thief. We are two productive members of the community who pay our taxes and contribute to the local economy. But, we are considering moving due to the eroding quality of Bloomington. We know many others who feel the same way. In the last week alone we have heard of at least one stabbing death and one gunshot death. And upon a bit of reading of the Bloomingtonian it appears that Bloomington is doing rather poorly overall in this category. According to BPD Chief Mike Diekhoof, from a March 2023 article in the Bloomingtonian, in 2022 in Bloomington a gun crime occurred every 2.77 days. And someone shot at someone else every 5.2 days! And this is an upward moving trend. What the hell is going on here!? The previous mayor seemed to care little about this. Is the new mayor working with you to do something about all this? Where is the salary study data that is now also outdated? A large sum was spent on this and there has been no transparency, no data results shared, and certainly no equitable response to non-union employees.
As much as I appreciate the efforts recently with the taking down and clean up of the homeless encampment, I still have to urge the city to do something about the stolen shopping carts throughout the town. In the video with the major cleaning up the camp you can see several stolen shopping carts. Even pictures of the homeless using them and moving them to their new location is shown. They are all over town from multiple different tax paying merchants. The homeless freely use these carts and abandom them at will without any repercussions. You can see city workers and police officers not even acknowledge them when they are seen (from advice from the city). I hope this changes with the new administration!
Along with many others of tonight’s council meeting, the new council and administration need to consider the public feel toward the showers west expansion - we don’t want police presence at our city hall and farmers market and showers plaza or by the tech park. This idea that you will progressively change the police by combining certain positions with CFRD in showers is very optimistic but comes at a greater cost. Inclusivity, equity, and reality of the community’s pulse should be accounted for in such large impact decisions for current and future development. As discussed, real estate is an asset - don’t sell the 3rd street station, do buy showers west for city hall expansion, but the plans for BPD need reimagined. CBU is also not being included in this ‘all administration needs to be under one roof’ idea and they aren’t included as eligible for certain benefits either. This addition of weapons, ultimate safety threat to regular staff members, and overall change in feel should simply not happen for a move literally next door to city hall. Staff have not been included in any discussions - has a survey or other metric been obtained about 100+ employees feelings about police presence moving to their day to day workplace? How about the tech park that received a special zoning overlay? Inequities already exist in city hall regarding pay, benefits, etc (the data is public). Now you want to move the group next door that has higher wages, gets rent/house payment assistance to live in city limits, some with take home cars, and has better negotiation ability for wages and benefits? This is an interesting move that doesn’t consider your core staff that run the city day to day -and in case one hasn’t noticed, they’ve been leaving like a revolving door for better pay, benefits, and work hours. This was highlighted tonight regarding the mayors office - not just for administration change turnover. Based on budget presentation information discussed in October of most years, most staff do not live in the city and need to commute in - while that is likely due to inability to purchase or rent in city limits, this is never discussed by administration and HR as wage increases would be needed to resolve this problem. Please pass this information onto incoming administration and council. Discussion with non union staff is not occurring and they’re not being taken into account or even given a seat at the table. Typically even council only focuses on police and fire, likely because they have unions and feel they can more freely advocate for themselves. Please consider other perspectives of many individuals you might impact and how to move forward in these decisions. Thanks for your consideration in this matter.
In regard to ticket #186427 - if the sentiment is that all administration needs to be under one building, why is CBU operating separately. This still doesn’t make sense as there are not even enough parking spots for employees at city hall (although remote/hybrid options should be supported in these modern time and progressive city). Will there be access to the west side of the building for all employees to fully enter city hall? This is much needed as the entrances are quite difficult for accessibility needs.
