GIS Intern
ITS Department
PROJECT(S) DESCRIPTION
Assists with use and maintenance of the City of Bloomington's Geographic Information System (GIS), associated data, and products. Assists with day to day operations or special projects. Helps expand ITS's current project load and attends to additional projects. Creates a 10 meter level US National Grid (USNG) data set in the City's GIS that can be used to assign USGN coordinates to addresses within the City's master address database. Imports current 1000 meter level USGN for Monroe County into the Ciyt's GIS and divides and identifies the smaller areas apporopriately.
TRAINING/SKILLS
Good communication, ability to focus on detailed oriented tasks effectively, ability to communicate with department and City personnel and the general public in a courteous, tactful and professional manner.
EXPERIENCE
Completed or currently enrolled in coursework applying geospatial or related technology desired.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Working knowledge of GIS or related mapping software such as ArcGIS or QGIS. General computer skills. Knowledge of specific steps needed to create the dataset can be learned on the job. High school degree with some college undergraduate experience or the equivalent knowledge, skills, and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Working knowledge of GIS or related mapping software products such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Mapbox, OpenLayers, Google Maps/Earth, CartDB, or AutoCAD. Experience working with data management software. Proficiency in office productivity computer software and general computer skills.
