About Canku Luta Gardens

Canku Luta Gardens primarily grows rare vegetables that are indigenous to the Americas, that were raised and harvested by American Indians for centuries, and in some cases for thousands of years. In an effort to keep these heirloom indigenous plants from becoming extinct, Canku Luta Gardens grows plants and saves seeds. Over the years we have expanded the plants we grow to include plants indigenous to other parts of the world as well.

All plants are raised by veganic organic methods. In addition to being organically grown, animal products are not used, in support of the vegan community. We do not use any chemicals either.

Proceeds of sales at the Bloomington Community Farmers' Market is used to provide seeds, plants, gardening tools and gardening equipment to Lakota American Indian communities in South Dakota. The goal is to assist them in growing healthy fresh foods, while increasing their self sufficiency. We are a 100% volunteer organization and all profits go directly to our projects.

The Canku Luta organization continues a 35 year history with Bloomington, IN. The community has always been very supportive, participating in food drives, etc. through fundraising events at various locations, such as the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, The Waldron Arts Center, and the Bluebird, to name a few. Canku Luta's primary work is with the Lakota communities in South Dakota; providing food and other necessities to the reservations.

Canku Luta means Red Road in the Lakota language.
