Susan Sandberg joined the Bloomington City Council in January, 2007 serving the remaining last year of Chris Gaal's term when he was elected Monroe County Prosecutor. Susan was elected to that at-large seat in 2008 and re-elected in 2012 serving as Council President in 2008, 2011, and 2017. Prior to her elections to Council, Susan served as a member of the Bloomington Utilities Service Board.

Susan is a career advisor with the Career Development Office of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IU where she had also served as the coordinator with the Arts Administration program. A former social worker, Susan has been a case manager with children in need of services through Head Start, Greene and Monroe County Offices of Family and Children in Child Protective Services, and The Villages.

As a community volunteer, Susan has served on the Board of the South Central Community Action Program, an advisor to Projects Care and Hope through Centerstone, and a volunteer with New Leaf/New Life, providing educational and support services to the Addicts in Recovery program both inside and out of the Monroe County Correctional Center. Susan is a founding member of the Democratic Womens Caucus and is the Vice Chair of the Monroe County Democratic Party. Prior to her appointment to Council by Democratic Caucus in 2007, there were no women serving on the City Council, something that Susan believes should no longer be the case in the modern age as more women step forward to be included in leadership roles in their community.

Her Council priorities include affordable housing, core neighborhood stabilization efforts, economic development through the arts, and adequate public safety and social service provisions. Susan serves on the Jack Hopkins Social Services Committee and the Community Block Grant Committee for Social Services, and is an active supporter of the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District. She is also a musician who can on occasion be found at the Player's Pub singing and playing with her ukulele band, The UkeTones.
