Sanitary Sewer Overflows Confirmed at Seven Locations between February 24 and February 26

Bloomington, Ind. — The City of Bloomington Utilities has confirmed Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSO) in the following seven locations between Saturday, February 24, and Monday, February 26.

  • West Brookdale Drive and North Woodburn Avenue
  • 1900 block South Walnut Street
  • East Hunter Avenue and South Eastside Drive
  • 2700 block South College Mall Road
  • 1500 block South Rogers Street
  • 1200/1300 blocks South College Mall Road
  • 100 block West Grimes Lane

The significant amount of rainfall received in recent days is believed to be the primary contributor to these sanitary sewer overflows.

In each instance, the City of Bloomington Utilities followed the proper clean-up protocol once the flow of the SSO ceased. The process of determining the volume of flow generated from these sanitary sewer overflows is ongoing.

Anyone in the aforementioned areas is advised to take precautions when coming into contact with untreated sewage that may have accumulated as a result of one of these overflows. Any individual who has come into direct contact with untreated sewage is advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.

The City of Bloomington Utilities is committed to a more efficient and reliable wastewater collection and treatment system, and reducing the number of sanitary sewer overflows is a major emphasis in that effort.

The City of Bloomington Utilities also is committed to transparency with respect to the residents of this community. This includes issuing public advisories in the event a confirmed sanitary sewer overflow has occurred.
