Bloomington Police Department Awarded Second Accreditation by National or State Agency Within Six Months

Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Police Department (BPD) was accredited by the Indiana Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (ILEAC) Wednesday morning in Indianapolis. The state agency conferred the department’s accreditation in a ceremony at the Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Mid-Winter Conference. The award recognizes the department’s implementation of best practices in contemporary law enforcement.  Effective January 23, 2019, the accreditation will be recognized for three years.

The ILEAC award represents the BPD’s second accreditation by a state or national agency within six months. The BPD’s initial recognition at the state level follows its first national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) in July 2018. Made in recognition of the department’s excellence in public safety and commitment to community, the BPD’s CALEA accreditation is renewable on a four-year cycle.

“I’m grateful for and proud of the BPD’s commitment to the safety and well-being of everyone in our community,” said Mayor John Hamilton. “This recognition at the state level, on top of the national CALEA accreditation the department earned last year, demonstrate this commitment in a measurable way, and require our ongoing dedication and adherence to the pillars and practices that best protect the public.”

During the IACP conference, the BPD’s Sergeant Jason Shaevitz was recognized with the 2018 William Sudbury Memorial Leadership Award. Presented during a ceremony honoring the most recent graduates of the Police Executive Leadership Academy, the award recognizes the officer’s awareness of the need for continuous learning, commitment and courage to make change to enhance leadership and organizational effectiveness, exemplification of and support of others’ leadership, and promotion of personal and organizational accountability. Shaevitz has been with BPD for over 17 years.

“Sgt. Shaevitz truly leads by example,” said BPD Chief Mike Diekhoff in presenting the award.  “From accomplishments in his community and knowing and caring about its members; to raising the bar of professionalism and service within his department.”
