Be More Awards to Recognize Volunteers and Benefit Nonprofits March 26

Bloomington, Ind. – The City of Bloomington Volunteer Network and its partners invite the public to the Be More Awards, a community-wide celebration of volunteerism. This 36th annual awards program will be held from 7:00-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater (114 E. Kirkwood).

The event will honor ten volunteers who have made exceptional efforts to improve the lives of other Bloomingtonians.  The award winners were selected from a pool of 34 individuals and 23 groups nominated in a variety of categories, including youth, college student, environmental sustainability, health and wellness, education and literacy, arts and culture, and lifetime of service.  Each award will be presented by a different community member, including Mayor John Hamilton and Efrat Feferman, executive director of the United Way of Monroe County.

“Our community is enriched by an abundance of public engagement,” said Hamilton. “Many of Bloomington’s signature events -- from the Soup Bowl Benefit to the Lotus Festival -- would be inconceivable without their volunteer component. These events, and so many more throughout the year, enhance our quality of life and reinforce our safety net. The volunteers who make them happen are real pillars of the community. The Be More Awards are a chance to salute these folks -- so often behind the scenes -- and inspire others to serve.”

The Be More Awards is a program of the City of Bloomington Volunteer Network. The Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County contributes $500 to each of the ten organizations for which the award recipients volunteer. Co-sponsors include the IU Credit Union, United Way of Monroe County, City of Bloomington Community and Family Resources Department, and WTIU Public Television.

The event is free and a fundraising after-party at Nick’s English Hut (423 E. Kirkwood) will follow the awards ceremony.
