Commission on the Status of Women Hosts “Women. Power. Progress.” Women’s Leadership Development Event

Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women invites community members to its annual women’s leadership development event on Saturday, March 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Showers City Hall. The theme for this year’s event is “Women. Power. Progress.” The event is offered free of charge.

After registration and a light breakfast beginning at 10:00 a.m, the program will begin at 10:30 a.m. with an award presentation to 2019 Emerging Leader Bridgett DiVohl and a keynote speech by Keyandra Wigfall. A graduate student at the Indiana University School of Public Health, Wigfall’s experience as a graduate assistant for the school’s Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion inspired her to create programming for young black women, including the B.L.O.O.M Mentoring Program. Her presentation will address taking action in the community by implementing timely initiatives for women and girls.

Local entrepreneur Bridgett DiVohl will be honored with the Emerging Leader Award for the fair wages and benefits she provides her employees at Royale Hair Parlor, the opportunities she creates for LGBTQ+ individuals, and the non-profit event and gallery space she provides at her salon. DiVohl has organized fundraisers for both individuals and organizations; she is a leader with Local First Bloomington; and a supporter of Bloomington PRIDE.

The event will also feature presentations by several recipients of the Commission’s Leadership Scholarship Initiative, which provides funds for women in the community to build their leadership skills.

“The commission does valuable work in connecting women with opportunities for growth and in recognizing women who are making extraordinary efforts to better the community,” said Mayor John Hamilton. “Bloomington abounds in talented, hard-working people dedicated to increasing equity.”

Co-sponsors of this event include the City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women and the City of Bloomington Community & Family Resources Department.
