City Sanitation Department Offering New Yard Waste Carts for Sale

Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Sanitation Department will begin offering 64-gallon carts as a new residential yard waste disposal option. Surplus, wheeled carts retrofitted with green lids are being made available to residents who request them for a one-time charge of $70, which includes Indiana sales tax.

Currently, City residents place yard waste for curbside collection in brown paper bags, 48-inch by 24-inch bundles, or 35-gallon metal and plastic containers, and are assessed a $1 pickup charge per unit, added to the resident’s City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) bill. Current sanitation guidelines require that all yard waste bundles weigh less than 40 pounds.

Although not required for yard waste collection, the new cart option has several benefits for residents.  It eliminates the need to purchase brown paper yard bags or to bundle up sticks, brush, or limbs. At nearly double the capacity of the 35-gallon plastic or metal waste containers currently allowed for yard waste collection, the wheeled 64-gallon carts can make yard cleanup more efficient. There will be no weight limit on the carts; the only requirement is that the lid be fully closed when the cart is placed at the curb. The cost per pickup will remain $1, which will appear on the resident’s CBU bill.

“With warmer weather on the horizon, yard waste season will soon be in full swing,” said Rhea Carter, Director of Sanitation. “We’re excited to offer Bloomington residents another option for yard waste collection that is convenient, cost-effective, and sustainable.”  To place an order for a new yard waste container, please contact the Sanitation Department at (812) 349-3443 or sanitation@bloomington.in.gov.
