Progress continues on the Fourth Street Garage. Demolition will begin the week of September 3 and is expected to conclude in late November/early December.  Beginning August 26, traffic will be restricted from the northernmost lane on Third Street and the southernmost lane on Fourth Street and a driving lane and parking lane on the west side of Walnut Street (closest to the garage).

For safety reasons, the north-south alley behind the garage will be closed during the work hours of 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., after which the alley will re-open to pedestrian traffic. A temporary covered walkway will be built in the alley to provide safe access for pedestrians and patrons of the businesses located in the alley. During the hours the north-south alley is closed, deliveries can be made through the center alley (running from College Avenue to the garage). Once demolition is complete, the north-south alley behind the garage project will re-open and only close as needed during construction.

Construction of the new garage is slated to begin in December 2019 and be complete by December 2020.

Preliminary design of the new Trades District garage is also underway. This approximately 400-car structure will be constructed on the northwest side of the Showers Building just south of 10th Street and east of the B-Line Trail. The Trades District garage will be constructed over part of a surface parking lot and will serve the current and future businesses in the Trades District as well as residents and visitors during non-business hours. The preliminary design will go before the Redevelopment Commission in August prior to being considered by the Plan Commission later this fall. Construction of the Trades District garage is anticipated to begin as early as December 2019 and be completed by the end of 2020.

The Brighten B-town initiative has progressed to Zone 2, where crews are focusing on cleaning and painting curbs in the Prospect Hill neighborhood.  Since the coordinated maintenance program began April 1, more than 21,068 linear feet of curb have been painted and 15,890 pounds of curbside debris removed.  Additionally, 330 fire hydrants have been painted, 1816 storm water inlets cleared, and 112.25 truckloads of mulch laid. Brighten B-town has integrated the efforts of staff from multiple City departments to deliver upkeep and maintenance services block by block.  Brighten B-town progress may be charted at https://bloomington.data.socrata.com/Maps/Brighten-B-Town-Progress-Data/x34x-iyyi

Replacement of curb ramps at West Sixth and Morton Streets is underway.  This project is a continuation of the Downtown Curb Ramp Project to improve safety and accessibility at multiple intersections downtown.  Lane restrictions will occur intermittently during this project More information about the Downtown Curb Ramps Project is available at https://bloomington.in.gov/engineering/projects/curbrampsii

Traffic restrictions are in place on South Walnut Street through August 1, 2019 for demolition and removal of debris in preparation for the buildout of the Urban Station II apartment building.  Grand Contracting LLC has been working with the City and adjacent property owners to collaborate on the logistics as the buildout continues.  The building’s projected completion date is August 2020.

Lane restrictions will be implemented on West Bloomfield Road from South Patterson Drive to South Adams Street this week as construction of the missing gap in the existing multi-use path along the north side of West Second Street/West Bloomfield Road continues. Crews will also be improving the signalized intersections of West Bloomfield Road at South Landmark Avenue and West Second Street at South Patterson Drive. The federally-funded project is included in the Bloomington/Monroe County Metropolitan Planning Organization (BMCMPO) Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP). Construction completion is slated for fall 2019. More information about the Second & Bloomfield Multimodal Safety Project is available at  https://bloomington.in.gov/engineering/projects/bloomfield

As the busy summer improvement season continues, the City of Bloomington encourages drivers to exercise particular caution in road work zones. Drivers should respect posted signs and directions from flaggers, and allow for extra travel time in anticipation of delays.
