City Invites Community Groups, Entertainers to Take Part in Bicentennial Street Fair April 29

Bloomington, Ind.—The City of Bloomington continues its year-long Bicentennial celebration with a Bicentennial Street Fair on Kirkwood Avenue from noon until 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 29. Kirkwood Avenue will be closed that day between Indiana Avenue and Walnut Street for the Fair.

This event is an opportunity to use Bloomington's city streets in new ways: To meet neighbors, find out more about local businesses and organizations, and celebrate Bloomington's history as well as its future.

Plans for the Street Fair are underway, and some blocks of Kirkwood Avenue have already been "adopted" by neighboring businesses. According to event coordinator Leslie Brinson, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, Monroe County History Center, Monroe County Public Library and Indiana University have each chosen a block where they will highlight historical events and significant achievements that occurred in those areas, and in their organizations.

Brinson said the city is seeking additional businesses and organizations to take part in the Street Fair, interact with the community, and bring their own unique forms of celebration to the Bicentennial. Activities planned by each participating group should reflect Bloomington’s diversity, uniqueness, past, and future.

Local organizations and entertainers who would like to participate in the Street Fair may apply online. Applications are due March 1. Space for entertainment and activities is limited, and applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until all available spaces are filled.

“The opportunity to celebrate a 200th birthday doesn’t come around often! We’re excited that our beloved Kirkwood Avenue will be the main artery of this unique Bicentennial celebration," Brinson said. "The City will celebrate Bloomington through music, food, activities, and togetherness.”
