Position Description

The Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department seeks a Garden Supervisor who maintains the overall appearance and function of the Willie Streeter Community Gardens and Rev. Ernest D. Butler Park Gardens; leads ongoing garden preparations and maintenance; coordinates composting scheme; coordinates volunteer groups and individuals at gardens; communicates/enforces rules and policies with gardeners, both in-person and by email; maintains positive relations with gardeners and provides advice when requested; discourages the overall use of synthetic chemicals in garden plots and promotes organic practices; tracks maintenance of garden equipment and requests maintenance when required; gains familiarity with all departmental policies and procedures; performs a public relations function by acting as a spokesperson for the gardens and the department; coordinates projects with, and oversees, the Garden Laborer; and performs such other duties as may be required by the Program Specialist.


High school education or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Some college preferred.


Relevant gardening/farming/landscaping experience and demonstrated ability to work well with the public. Familiarity and working knowledge of Microsoft Office and G Suite is essential. Program administration experience is a plus.

Candidate will possess genuine enthusiasm for horticulture, outdoor activities, and outgoing interaction with the public. Candidate will have the ability to take direction from the Program Specialist, assess and prioritize tasks, self-direct to work independently, exercise good judgment, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work well with a diverse set of people, supervise others, withstand public complaints, act as a resource for gardener participants, and enforce program rules. Candidate should be able to lift at least 50 lbs., have a solid working knowledge of tools and powered landscaping equipment, and be willing and able to withstand hot weather and all-weather working conditions.


Current Adult, Child and Infant CPR and First Aid certifications or ability to obtain. Valid driver’s license required.


March – November, 25 hours per week. Evenings, days, early mornings, holidays and weekends, as frequently required.


$13.29 per hour
