Position Description

Employee works under the supervision of the Mowing Crew Staff Assistant when on duty as a member of a roving mowing work crew. Employee may be frequently directed to complete a job without direct supervision such as in the operation of a Parks Department tractor on/near community streets and roads and on Park properties. Employee performs mowing and bush hog work at park sites to maintain high standards for safety, maintenance, and appearance. Most duties are performed based on a project schedule, and are reviewed by a supervisor to ensure quality and efficiency standards are met. Performs a wide variety of duties and tasks related to the upkeep and maintenance of city parks, grounds, trails, and facilities. Primary duties are grounds keeping tasks such as grass mowing and trimming and occasionally operation of a tractor/bush hog. Additional Duties Include:

  • Performing mowing and trimming, tree cutting, brush and debris removal, material hauling, turf repair, leaf raking, painting, litter pick-up, and other related duties as assigned
  • Accountable for maintaining high standards for safety, maintenance, and appearance
  • Takes part in set-ups and dismantles of tables, chairs, tents, stages, etc for special events as needed
  • Continuous litter pick-up and removal from assigned areas as directed
  • Other duties as assigned

Specific Related Duties:

  • Operates tractor in a safe, efficient and courteous manner
  • Cleans and performs minor maintenance to tractor
  • Removes litter and other debris from assigned areas as directed

Training/Special Skills

Working knowledge and skill in the safe operation of tractors bush hogs, mowers, weedeaters, and other related grounds keeping equipment.

  • Ability to safely and courteously operate the tractor when required to do so
  • Working knowledge of mechanics and ability to perform safety/maintenance equipment inspections
  • Must be self-motivated, and have the ability to interact and work well with the public and other employees.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, have the ability to follow oral and written direction, and be capable of performing physically demanding work.
  • Valid driver’s license. Good driving record.

Physical Effort/Working Conditions

Must be in good physical condition. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is exerted by the employee in the setup and operation of equipment; including frequent bending, stooping, and the movement of extremities to operate equipment and perform work tasks. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is frequently required for extended periods of time in the lifting and loading of equipment and tools. Employee must be physically capable of lifting weights in excess of 75 pounds. Employee performs duties in and out of doors, in varying weather conditions, and is periodically exposed to work sites with traffic, noise, dust, and vehicle and equipment fumes.

Hours

8 hours per day, 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Some weekends may be required. 40-hour work week, except during periods of inclement weather. Employees under age eighteen are subject to restrictions on both hours and prohibited occupations.

Season

March 26 – November 9. Term of employment not to exceed nine months.

Salary

$11.61 - $12.88 per hour
