POSITION DESCRIPTION

Maintains a healthy environment for shelter animals through careful disinfection techniques as prescribed in cleaning protocols and through observing proper animal handling to treat, prevent and/or contain infectious diseases. Performs daily cleaning and disinfection of common areas following prescribed shelter protocols. Performs direct animal care and cleaning as instructed, ensures all animals are provided with adequate food, water, bedding and toys. Monitors animals for signs of ill health and disease. Notifies supervisor to receive direction on treatment and implementation of prescribed medical treatments. Exercises and socializes animals as directed and as time allows.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High school education or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Shelter/kennel cleaning experience, preferred.

 

TRAINING/SKILLS

Ability to properly and safely handle a variety of animals of different temperaments and in various conditions of health. Knowledge of basic animal health care, animal behavior, and a commitment to animal welfare. Experience with and/or working knowledge of disease control best practices in an animal shelter setting. Attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate record keeping. Ability to communicate with general public in a tactful, effective manner in situations of potential conflict. Ability to lift in excess of fifty pounds.  Ability to work under extended periods of physical exertion.  Ability to adhere to strict protocols.  Janitorial experience and/or shelter kennel, veterinary office or medical facility employment. 

 

HOURS

Weekend availability needed, typically Tues-Sat 10am-2pm

 

SALARY

$12.44/hr
