2019 Black History Month City of Bloomington Events

  • Kick-off - January 31st, 2019. Reception begins at 5:30 p.m. and program begins at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers.
  • State of the Black Community - February 12th, 2019. Program begins at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers.
  • Essay Contest Reception - February 27th, 2019. Program begins at 6:00 p.m. at Fairview Elementary School.
  • Gala - March 2nd, 2019. Ticketed event. Reception and Silent Auction begin at 6:00 p.m. and Gala begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn. Tickets are available from the Buskirk-Chumley Theater beginning at 11 a.m. on January 31, 2019.

Essay Contest Information

The 2019 Black History Month theme is "Reclaiming Our Time." "Reclaiming Our Time" is about inspiring our community to reflect on the ways historic wrongs are being corrected and the spaces the Black community has created to celebrate culture, history, and community. 

The subjects for the Essay Contest are: 

  • I PROMISE School, LeBron James
  • Kimberle Crenshaw, advocate and scholar
  • 1968 Olympics, Black Power protest
  • The Hate U Give, book and/or film
  • James Baldwin, novelist and poet
  • Ryan Coogler, Director of Black Panther
  • Maxine Waters, Congresswoman
  • Eunique Jones Gibson, "Because of Them, We Can" campaign
  • Michelle D. Alexander, “The New Jim Crow”
  • Missy Elliott, singer/songwriter
  • Serena Williams, professional tennis player
  • Ayanna Pressley, House of Representatives-elect
  • Stacey Abrams, politician
  • James McCune Smith, first Black doctor
