Position Description

Employee is responsible for the opening and secure closing of all restroom facilities in the Department’s park system on a daily/nightly basis. In addition employee makes a random presence daily/nightly at any of the Department’s 33 park sites, two cemeteries, multi-purpose greenway trails, and other outdoor public facilities.

  • Provides a presence in the parks promoting the proper use of facilities in compliance with applicable ordinances, rules, and regulations notifying appropriate law enforcement personnel when potentially dangerous situations arise.
  • Provides assistance to park patrons by giving directions, answering questions, identifying park facilities and programs, and serving as the department representative in the resolution of user’s complaints and concerns.
  • Maintains cleanliness of parks with constant pick-up of trash and debris, empties trash receptacles, prevents or abates graffiti, and reports major vandalism, safety hazards, and maintenance needs to appropriate staff. Performs minor maintenance and custodial duties as required.
  • Maintains cooperative relationships with the Bloomington Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s department, DNR Conservation Officers, and other law enforcement agencies, and provides assistance to these agencies as requested or required.
  • Secures designated buildings, gates, and other facilities after closing hours.
  • Prepares detailed and accurate reports on incidents, crimes, and medical emergencies. Prepares daily activity logs, and maintains records on maintenance inspections, vandalism, incidents, lost and found property, and evidence recovered.
  • Performs other duties and as required.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Previous experience in a customer service type position having gained a great deal of communication and people skills.
  • Minimum age 21 years.
  • Must be self-motivated, and have the ability to interact and work well with the public and other employees.
  • Must be able to multi-task.
  • Must be reliable and punctual in attendance, and be flexible on available work schedule.
  • Must have the ability to follow oral and written direction, and complete written reports.
  • Must be well groomed and maintain a professional appearance at all times. Staff shirts will be provided at must be worn at all times while on duty.
  • Valid Driver’s License. Good driving record.
  • No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.

Physical Effort/Working Conditions

Must be in good physical condition. Must be able to walk distances across moderate to rough terrain for extended periods of time, and be physically able to operate a motor vehicle for extended periods of time. Employee is frequently on foot while performing routine visits rounds of parks and recreation facilities. Performs duties in and out of doors, in varying weather conditions, and during late night and early morning hours. Moderate to strenuous physical effort may sometimes be required in the lifting and loading of materials and equipment. Employee must be physically capable of lifting weights in excess of 50 pounds.

Hours

5 hours per evening, 10 p.m.-3 a.m., 25 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Holidays required.

Season

May 4-August 7. Term of employment not to exceed nine months.

Salary

$14.95-$15.15 per hour
