Biking in Bloomington:
The City of Bloomington is proud to be recognized as a Gold-level "Bicycle Friendly Community" by the League of American Bicyclists, for "longstanding commitments to providing safe accommodation and facilities for bicyclists, and for their efforts to encourage bicycle travel for transportation and recreation." Bloomington was the first League-designated "Bicycle Friendly Community" in Indiana, and the highest rated community in the eastern United States.
The City of Bloomington works to develop a connected network of safe and convenient facilities that enable people of all ages and mobilities to walk or bike to their destinations. Data from the 2011 US Census estimates ranks Bloomington #2 in the country for the percentage of people who walk or bike to work, among cities with greater than 65,000 people.
Choosing to walk or bike will ultimately reduce traffic congestion in the City and improve the health, fitness, and quality of life of Bloomington's residents. The Transportation Commission actively works towards alternative transportation goals by doing the following activities: identifying and alleviating safety issues for bicyclists and pedestrians; educating people about their rights and responsibilities whether they walk, roll, ride bicycles or drive cars; advocating the use and construction of trails, bike lanes, sidepaths, sidewalks and other bicycle and pedestrian-friendly facilities.
Transportation Commission
This commission makes informed recommendations on transportation and parking regulations within the city code. By reviewing projects and proposing policies, the commission aims to foster a safe, equitable, and sustainable transportation system for all residents.
Local-Motion Grant Program
A grant that provides support for initiatives that focus on cultural, day-to-day, or other locally-based activities that aim to strengthen our diverse and vibrant walking and bicycling culture.
