Curious about where your water comes from or what happens once it goes down the drain? Bloomington Utilities offers guided tours at each of our treatment plants for groups of visitors ages 10 and up. These tours provide an informative, fun, behind-the-scenes look at the important work our plants do every day to keep our community healthy and thriving.

Attendees should be able to:

Monroe Water Treatment Plant

The Monroe Water Treatment Plant has been turning Lake Monroe water into safe, clean drinking water since 1967. Expanded in 2014 to produce 30 million gallons daily, it serves over 145,000 people across Bloomington and Monroe County. A vital part of our community, the plant ensures water meets or exceeds all state and federal standards, supporting homes, businesses, and public services.

Dillman Road Wastewater Treatment Plant

Located just south of Bloomington, the Dillman Road Wastewater Treatment Plant has been treating our community’s wastewater since 1982. The plant treats up to 15 million gallons of wastewater each day using advanced filtration, disinfection, and nutrient removal, with extra care during the summer and fall. Treated water is safely returned to Clear Creek. The plant’s lab also offers testing for swimming pools and private wells for the public.

Using modern disinfection and sludge-handling processes, it ensures the water leaving the plant is safe for Bean Blossom Creek. The plant is named for Blucher Adams Poole, a dedicated engineer whose work helped protect Indiana’s water and environment.
