Chad Ackerman is a the business owner of Ackerman Auto Detail located at 630 South Patterson Drive. This morning, after coming to work he found that his workplace was full of smoke. This is due to the common occurrence of the homeless population using the space behind his business as a place where they light fires. These fires are uncovered and lead to a very toxic smell. This is a potential danger to the business, employees, customers and city of Bloomington.

Fire Hazards

420 N Oak ST

Case Date:
7/25/2024

Neighborhood residents near the White Oak Cemetery and the Westside Cemetery have been experiencing toxic smoke from the hazardous fires taking place in the encampments between Butler Park and N Adams St. The residents believe that the individuals in this encampment are either burning plastic trash, plastic coating of stripped wire, or potentially cooking meth. Residents have reported this issue previously through a uReport, but the fire hazards were not addressed. To get to the encampment you can enter from the B-line along N. Adams St., next go right at the end of the mesh wire fence (near B-line light post #183), then cross the railroad tracks (heading south), and you will find the well worn trail to the encampment.

Today I visited the Dollar Tree on the East side. I was there around 2pm. The store had multiple aisles overcrowded with boxes of stock needing unpacked. One aisle in general was completely full from one end to the other. This is the aisle in the photo. Other aisles had boxes on carts throughout and had a path to weave through. I understand that they are understaffed but this felt very unsafe. If there was a fire I do believe it could be difficult to get through the store to get out. It felt unsafe. I'm not sure if it is considered a fire hazard but in case it is I wanted to let you know about it.
