This is day 6 of the illegal frat flying a flag with their symbol on it. In a note from City Planning, we were told that their flag with "name and symbol" of the frat had to be taken down or they would accrue fines beginning with $2500 if not taken down by Oct. 10, 2017. The flag with their Greek letters was not taken down until late Friday afternoon, but the flag with their symbol (Skull and crossbones) is still flying. The frat is also known as "THe Skulls" "Skulls and Bones" or the "skullhouse" (see Wikipedia article on this fraternity, especially nicknames) and the Skull and crossbones is depicted on their badge and coat of arms (ibid). In the NOV issued by the City, the landlord and frat members were told that "no fraternity signage" would be allowed. Hence I am asking that fines accrue from day 1 of the date 10/10/2017 until the second flag comes down, which as of this evening is still flying. The photo attached here is from late this afternoon. I have photos documenting each day (seom of which I have already sent in as Ureports). We were informed that fines were to start this past Friday (Oct. 13), and I wish to formally object, inthat the landlord and fraternity members have knowingly ignored the city NOV date. The first flag came down ONLY when one of the City Planners addressed a note directly to the landlord ("dear Jeff" -- wholly inappropriate) stating that the fines would begin that day. As soon as he mentioned that the fines would start, the landlord called the frat and had them take down only one flag (the one with the Greek letters for the frat, but not the Skull and Crossbones) as well as warning them not to hold the specifically forbidden frat event (a concert for their philanthropy). THe party was moved to avoid the hefty fine this would have accrued, priving that the only way the City (and we the neighbors) will get any relief from the landlord and frat memebrs ignoring the City's NOV is to enforce the fines listed in the NOV. It is unfair to the City's taxpayers, myself and my neighbors included, to allow the hard work that we performed to document all these illegal activities to be shunted aside so that "dear Jeff" doesn't have to pay the appropriate fines he has earned. It has taken two months for this process to get to the point of finally being able to be enforced, and I want to see full enforcement effected so that we don't have to continue going through this. Only when hefty fines accrue will the landlord and frat members take this NOV seriously. By planning to have their frat event on the premises Sat. AFTER being informed of the NOV 9/7/2017, it is clear that only fines will make them cease. Pleasae consider this a serious and heartfelt request to alter the fine date so that people respect your regulations, as most of us do. Thank you.

City sent a "Courtesy warning of a zoning violation" to the landlord of this illegal fraternity regarding non-compliance of the UDO with regard to the lighting on this house and the one nextdoor at 1000 E. Atwater. Letter was mistakenly November 22. Date by which the changes to the lighting was to be effected was October 13, 2017. I am writing to plead for some action to be taken as the light is very obnoxiously in our eyes (attached photo was taken from inside my house a few minutes ago after 1 am). This is one of several lights that were to be fixed by this date. Please do not make us wait any longer for this issue to be rectified. Thank you!

Hi, I'm wondering what I need to know about putting a shed in our backyard. How big can it be / where we can put it, etc. My address is actually 1122 E 1st St, not 1123. Thank you.

Hedge growing in front of house at the SE corner of Henderson and University can block driver heading west on University from seeing car (bicycle?) heading north on Henderson. I was heading north; had to slam on brakes. I thought the other driver had failed to stop, but when i came back later, i found that their line of sight might have been blocked. Thanks!

Line of Sight

401 S Woodlawn AVE

Case Date:
6/21/2018

Pulling out of this alley either direction onto Woodlawn is a hazard, especially for pedestrians and bicyclists. To the right (on Subway/apartment bldg. side) is shrubbery that completely blocks the view of the sidewalk and street. Approaching it from the alley, we can't see if any vehicles or pedestrians are approaching from the north, traveling south. To the left of the alley is a rental house that has a shrub or tree or some other type of greenery that hangs far enough forward that we can't see what's approaching from the south, traveling north. We must ease our vehicles out into the street in order to see what's coming on Woodlawn in either direction. If we're turning right (to head north) when we ease out into the street for visibility, when we see that it's clear to turn onto Woodlawn it forces the front half of the vehicle to swing into the southbound lane. The shrub to the right of the alley (Subway building) needs to be trimmed drastically or removed altogether for safety's sake since the view of pedestrians and vehicle/bicycle traffic is completely blocked. And the tree/bush on the other side of the rental house to the left needs to be trimmed back enough for visibility. This alley is used daily by many. It contains IU parking spaces and parking for residential rental property, and U.S. Mail vehicles travel it daily for delivery. A colleague reported this to the city last year and nothing came of it.
