Traffic Suggestions

I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed changes to the traffic flow on Walnut, College, Atwater and Third Street for the following reasons: Traffic congestion on third street due the numerous busses that stop at each bus stop would make travel east on third street trecherous for drivers and pedestrians. Changing Walnut and College would require changing parking configurations and meters, a cost that is not small. There are many other more pressing needs in Bloomington for individuals with limited incomes, like housing. Also, if in fact there are facts to back the statement about cars going 40 Mph, why is there not a way to change the lights to prevent a person from reaching that speed. If in fact, that has found to be a problem by local law enforcement. Delivery trucks often block one lane of both College and Walnut and with two way traffic there will be traffic interuptions and the possibility for drivers taking dangerous risks to be able to get by the parked trucks. I have not seen evidence that crossing s street with two way traffic is less dangerous than crossing a street with one way traffic. We live in an age where instant gratification is rampid so people will take risks crossing the street, as I have seen. I saw a comment from one business in town, Gratzis, that wants the change. I have not seen that a survey of the other businesses has found. However, I question whether this is a business recommendation based onother cities or what. I can only hope that the outside company that is making these proposals has experience in working with communities with Bloomington’s unique town and gown population.

Blocked Sidewalk

201 S Jefferson ST

Case Date:
10/29/2018

The pedestrian walk between Jefferson and Roosevelt where Fourth St. would be if it continued between these two streets is partially blocked at the Jefferson end by vegetation, including a young redbud tree. I reported this about a month ago, and nothing has been done. Could someone at least please tell me if and when the walk is going to be cleared, and if not, why not? As far as I know, it's a public walkway.

Biking & Walking

100-182 North College Avenue

Case Date:
6/20/2017

Hello, I am writing in concern of the spray painted orange bikes popping up around the city, especially regarding the square. These are a part of a marketing strategy for the new fitness gym around the College Mall, Orange Theory. My concern is that the locked bikes are taking the spaces on bike racks that could be used for commuters and patrons in particularly convenient and high-traffic areas. This includes bike racks around the square, in front of Yogi's, and there was even one locked to a pole around the Scholar's Inn Bakehouse on 3rd (which seems like another issue). I am hoping the city can possibly speak with Orange Theory about the placement of their marketing devices.

Biking & Walking

East 7th Street

Case Date:
8/9/2017

In the transition from Longview Ave. to E. 7th St., the asphalt multi-use lane turns into a double-wide cement sidewalk. I've always stayed on the path because it links directly to the underpass at the bridge and seems and extension of the bike path. But today someone told me, "Get off the sidewalk idiot!" I pride myself on following the rules of bicycling. AQm I right or wrong to be using that stretch of cement? Also, Smith Road between 3rd St. and Moore's Pike is a disaster for bicyclists--way too narrow to safely bike on the road, but only a cement sidewalk on the west side, which then vanishes to become a multi-use path on the WEST side of the road, which then vanishes again at the corner of Moore's Pike to become a sidewalk traveling west. How can my kids safely ride their bikes down Smith Road!?

1. Many of our faculty, staff and students (as well as others) have to cross 10th street to get to their parking lots behind Geology or the Fee Lane garage. Although there is a pedestrian crossing, most cars do not stop and it is difficult to cross. Also, when the buses are stopped, cars often pass on the left and come very close to hitting us. This has happened to me and many others many times. I was almost hit again yesterday. I believe that if the zone was better marked on the road or around the road and/or had flashing lights like some others around the campus, cars would be more prone to slow down and respect the rules. Last year, I contacted the IU Police Dept. who informed me that the street belonged to the city of Bloomington and that they would mention it to them. However, I never heard another word from them and the zone remains dangerous. Is there something that the school can do before someone gets seriously injured? We would all be very grateful

Why have long stretches of the road on S. Washington now unavailable for parking? If this is a new standard, will this be done city wide?

The intersection of 14th and Indiana is very dangerous. If heading west on 14th street the incline of Indiana in combination with the parked cars along Indiana causes for you to not be able to see if it is safe to cross. I believe that a 4 way stop on the corner of Indiana and 14th is needed. I personally have seen many near accidents as I am a resident of this area and have almost gotten into an accident myself due to not being able to see traffic driving south on Indiana. Feel free to contact me about more information. As a student, I do not want to see other students become injured due to blocked line of view.
