Biking & Walking

Case Date:

Hi - I feel like the city needs to issue a warning to cyclists to take extra precautions when locking up their bike. On Monday around 11am, my $1200 bike was stripped of all of its parts that were not locked to the bike rack. This happened right outside my office in a somewhat busy parking lot, in downtown Bloomington, in broad daylight. From the security footage it took the person about 20 minutes. A police report was filed and the officer mentioned he'd seen similar cases recently. After posting about this on social media, I've now heard numerous cases of bikes either being stripped completely or partially during the day at various spots downtown over the past couple weeks. Had there been any media or warnings issued, I would have certainly brought my bike into my office, rather than risk losing most of it. I realize it's just a possession (and not a life) and can be replaced, but given that this seems to be a growing trend, a warning and increased awareness would be helpful.

Subaru has been parked in same spot in 200 block of North Maple street for more than a week without being moved. Tire is going flat. Owner does not live on Maple street, but parks second car there in order to avoid purchasing proper parking permit for residential zone where they live (700 block of west Sixth st). Maple needs to be included in residential permit zone as it is the first street with no parking restrictions west of downtown. As a result, it is a catch-all for anyone living on or visiting adjoining blocks to the east adding congestion and difficulty of residents parking in front of their house.

My daughter Jordan Ozolin lives at a rental house located at 523 S Park Ave. She lives with three other female roommates. Today, 12-4-17, at 3:13pm she called 911 to report a potential intruder into the house based on unusual sounds and a suspect grey Mitsubishi Eclipse sports car parked in the houses restricted parking lot at the rear of the house. Police arrived, cleared the house, and had a discussion with the man who returned to claim the Mitsubishi Eclipse. According to my daughter, the man claimed to be a construction worker, and was looking for a parking spot closer to where he said he was working. A picture of the Eclipse and license plate, “7FRESH7” is attached, as taken by my daughter when the car was parked in the restricted parking lot. This plate information was provided to the police. I am sending this report due to the concern that I have for my daughter and her roommates’ safety. The Eclipse, as well as a pickup at some point in the day, were seen in the restricted parking lot, and reported to the police when they arrived. According to my daughter, other neighbors saw the suspect vehicles and witnessed someone trying to open the door to the house. I respectfully request the police do several actions in response to this incident to support the safety of my daughter and her roommates: 1) Periodically drive by the 523 S Park Avenue house, both front and back sides (where the restricted parking lot is) and check for the suspect vehicles (specifically the Mitsubishi and/or pickup truck), and if found present, conduct a local search for the owner, and if not present, have the vehicle(s) towed away. 2) Since the police have the means of determining the owner of the Eclipse with the “7FRESH7” plate and owner’s residence, request that the police conduct periodic checks of the owner’s residence for suspicious activity, and take responsive action if warranted. Thank you, Aaron Ozolin

Hi, I am kind of confused about offroading laws / city ordinances. From what I can tell it is not illegal to drive a vehicle (say a jeep) on someone elses property unless one of the following is true: - There are posted no trespassing signs - You are told to stop - You have to bypass some sort of security system (such as a locked gated) This doesn't sound right to me though. Surely i'm missing something? Or is it legal to drive a vehicle on someones yard or something as long as you are not explicitly told not to? That would seem weird to me but I just cant find anything that says otherwise.
