My neighborhood (Near West Side) has been experiencing a very intense burning trash smell most nights for the past two months. This has been an ongoing issue for the past two years that I’ve lived here, but it has intensified. It causes me headaches and forces me to keep my windows closed and waste energy running my air conditioning. It’s not possible to walk around outside; this only happens at night. There are no neighbors or homeless people burning trash (I have walked around and looked, including on nearby train tracks). I have smelled this same smell coming from JB Salvage. Please help us! This is definitely causing long term health effects for this whole neighborhood.

I appreciate the progress on this squatter / fire hazard, but will simply boarding up the place solve the problem of homeless squatters using this as a bicycle chop shop? Is there anything else we can do to evict them from tearing off the plywood and squatting again? I get legal BS, but let's accelerate this and fix it. This place has been a fire hazard and theft / stripyard for years. The homeless is this area at 7AM, sitting between Grimes and Rallys, waiting to prey again - is a f'ing joke waiting to deal with privately. Do something.

Property is on SE corner of N Bryan and 7th St. The traffic calming bump out on the 7th street side is overgrown with Johnson grass and has been for months. A look at google street view shows it was overgrown in July of last year, showing this is a chronic issue at this location.

Occupants have been erecting numerous structures made of pallets, wood, and tarps throughout their property for several weeks. The backyard seems completely full of these shanties. Their "construction" continues throughout much of the evening many days of the week, often extending to 10:00pm or later. The banging and power tool noise is a nuisance and the many structures they are creating seem very unsafe, especially for the children that are seen/heard playing there.

The privacy fence on the southeast corner is falling down and parts are missing. This is allowing people to use this as a short cut on to private property that borders the back of the apartment. Attempts to contact the apartment have fallen on deaf ears.

The roof of this house has holes as large as beachballs, with racoons coming and going through them. Check the SW corner of the roof.

Garbage is all over the back of the lot. It looks like a dump. It is covering the woods and smells really terrible. There has been a person(s) living back there and they have a restraining order against them. The property is covered with trash, food, furniture, and needles. It is a hazardous area. The woods keep it covered during this time of the year, but when the leaves are gone it is really obvious that it is being used as a place to live.

My husband and I are present members of the YMCA, and go this facility often. We are concerned about the lack of cleanliness of the locker room, bathrooms and the drinking fountains. This is a health risk to our community, with the potential for diseases. Also, the drinking fountain in the track area is warm, plus never cleaned. Another example is in the shower. I have seen something left accidently like a shampoo bottle, and I will see it there for weeks at a time. The shower smells of urine,and it is NOT clean. Again, we are very concerned about possible diseases. The health department needs to do an inspection. My husband and I have complained to the YMCA multiple times, but nothing has changed. People who are unhoused are leaving their belongings / lots of trash in the alley of our office building. Customers/clients/pedestrians use this alley often.
