Fire Hazards

400 W Terrace DR

Case Date:
6/20/2024

Response to 189024 -- If the fires are happening daily at the homeless camp along the Rail Trail, and the fire department (MFPD) has been out twice this month, yet the fires continue, why would there not be an option to take some level of preventative enforcement action as opposed to reactive only that is not solving the underlying issue? This would be a daily call to 911 if people in the area called every time there was a large, illegal fire. Is that the best use of resources, as opposed to the City cleaning the area up, removing those illegally burning on City property, and preventing any future fires from being started by those illegally camping on the property? The City refuses to address the problem, the county has to roll a truck out here due to the City's inaction, and the adjacent property owners suffer. All to protect illegal activity!

Unsafe Buildings

619 N Washington ST

Case Date:

West end of the retaining wall on north side of the property (Cottage Grove side) has degraded so much so that the capstone is no longer supported by underlaying stone and could fail if any significant pressure is placed on it, such as someone sitting or stepping on it. It is adjacent to the former driveway.

Bus Services (Bloomington Transit)

Case Date:

Bus stop on N Illinois St across from Illinois Court in Crestmont badly needs no parking signs and painted curbs that indicate the length of the bus. People in wheelchairs cannot access the lift, and people are having to walk out into the road to catch the bus. It's on a hill and the parked vehicles effect visibility of oncoming bus, and you can't see any cars coming that might be in front of the bus. Oncoming traffic has to come to a complete stop, now, because the bus has trouble squeezing through. Sometimes, the bus has to just sit and wait. There's a concrete slab that connects the sidewalk with the road the bus driver can no longer lower the wheelchair lift onto because of the cars. The units there were empty, but now they are being rented, and the no parking sign that used to be there is gone. We need a painted curb the length of a bus, and clear markings. We also need parking enforcement to actually do their job when we call, but there's no sign there telling people not to park. The people who park there are mean and told me I should walk to work (and called me fat and lazy,) instead of taking public transportation when I have surgery coming up. I can’t even have a reasonable conversation with them, so I'm turning to you. Thank you.

Bus Services (Bloomington Transit)

Case Date:

There is a bench with a bus stop on N Illinois St across from N Illinois CT where the playground is always blocked by parked vehicles now that the no parking sign has gone missing. The bus can't pull over to the curb where there is concrete connecting the sidewalk so people in wheelchairs and with crutches can safely get on the bus' lift system. You have to walk out into the road now, and can't see the bus very well or other cars coming. Traffic coming from the other way has to come to a complete stop, now, when the bus comes through. When I politely asked the people parking there if they could leave enough room for the bus to pull over because I'm about to have surgery and be in a wheelchair to get to work, they called me fat and told me to walk as they were getting out of their parked vehicles, and they were very mean for no reason. We all live in public housing here, and I use public transportation for work. We also don't have any grocery stores close and have to take a bus to get food. We need no parking signs at our bus stops, and painted curbs showing people the width of the bus on N Illinois, and possibly the one attending corner of Lindbergh Dr and whatever that cross street is as well. Now that those remodeled units are becoming occupied, there will always be cars there unless we get No Parking signs for our bus stops. Thank you.

Traffic Suggestions

E 7th St & N Indiana Ave, Bloomington, IN 47408, USA

Case Date:
6/16/2024

The stop signs at this intersection are rather confusing because Indiana Avenue is a two-lane one-way street. It can be difficult to determine who has the right of way quickly enough to avoid interrupting the flow of traffic. Also, I have seen drivers ignore the stop signs on Indiana on several occasions. I think this intersection needs a stoplight.

Water Utility Problems

Case Date:
6/16/2024

The psi coming to the house is reading way too high--a plumber came out and measured the water pressure at 120 psi, which is way too high. According to the plumber, it has been potentially causing several problems in our house recently, including water heater valves to break on our new water heater, dishwasher leaks that led to us replacing the unit, pipes to leak, various faucet problems and damage to several parts of the house. After dealing with HVAC related to this yesterday, this morning we've discovered a leak in our kitchen plumbing that is now causing additional damage to the cabinetry. The plumber reported that high psi measurements are happening all over our end of town due to the city turning up the water pressure to accommodate new development. The city needs to address this issue, as it's posing a risk to so many of the existing homes in the area.

Fire Hazards

Case Date:
6/14/2024

Live fires nightly with noxious fumes all night every night, at least since the last weekend on May. Squatters camp seems well-established with bicycle parking, wood pile, several tents. Can fire trucks even get back there in a timely fashion? We feel unsafe. There is a difference between homeless, itinerants, and squatters. These appear to be squatters.
