Subject: Concern About Clogged Storm Drains on 1st Street
Dear Bloomington Town Official,
I am reaching out regarding an ongoing issue with leaves clogging the above-ground grated storm drains along 1st Street, between Henderson and Grant Streets. I previously reported this concern a few weeks ago, but the problem has reappeared due to the continued accumulation of leaves.
The situation seems to have worsened following Bloomington's policy change to no longer collect unbagged leaves. As a result, many residents are no longer raking, and the town has become noticeably untidy. These clogged drains pose a significant risk of flooding when it rains, creating potential hazards for our community.
I kindly ask for prompt attention to clear these drains and consider ways to address the broader issue of leaf accumulation to maintain the town’s cleanliness and prevent future drainage problems.
Thank you for your time and assistance.

For the Mayor's office: Can you please consider posting information somewhere besides Facebook? I should not need an account for that platform just to get information. Post it on the City website, or if you want social media, use something more open source like Bluesky. I appreciate the sharing of information, but wish it was in a different platform. Thank you.

Given that the City refuses to fine residents who blow leaves and grass into adjacent properties and/or onto sidewalks and streets (or even just acknowledge the validity of a complaint made about it), it seems like it will be perfectly fine in the future for everyone to just rake all their leaves and grass clippings into the streets and let the street-cleaners deal with the mess.

Comments for Administration and City Council members: please note the Bloomington public response and feelings as executive orders from Braun come down at the federal level - it is against the core values and heart of this community. The future is remote and hybrid with emphasis on flexibility as workers are human not cattle. DEI is important in every capacity, not whatever Braun’s “innovation” plan is - that is a buzzword, not DEI. Please please please continue to actually think in a forward direction with all residents, equity, the environment, and future generations in mind. It seems the state is now going backwards; Bloomington needs to continue progressing in a positive and inclusive way. Residents hope to see a public response and show of action that does NOT align with Braun’s recent takeover. We look forward to continuing to participate in a community that does great work for ALL with workers who happily serve us. Thank you for your consideration of these comments and continued work for the actual citizens who make up the community.

For the Mayor's Office:
Please consider dropping support for the Twitter/X platform. The owner in an unapologetic Nazi and the city should not be supporting that platform in any capacity. I would also encourage you to discontinue Facebook. The Mayor's office, especially, should be posting information in a more open, accessible format. Consider Bluesky or Mastodon. Thank you.

Homeless living behind unoccupied home with trash and fires. One person named Bob related to the property owner is allowed to camp there but in his absence others have taken up living behind home. Neighbors are now complaining. Mike Harper (812-360-5782) related to the absentee owner occasionally cuts the grass.

There appears to be a small homeless camp in the backyard behind the unoccupied house with a tent and two abandoned vehicles. The house itself has been vacant for many years and none of the people staying there seem to be entering the home. A relative of the people who own the house, a man named Bob, began staying in the backyard over a year ago, but he has since left and other people are now staying there in his absence. Recently, neighbors have found human feces and needles in their yard nearby, creating sanitary concerns, as well as heard a woman yelling in what sounded like distress at night. Outreach to the family of the property owner has not been successful so far, so I’m hoping someone could please look into this situation. Thank you!

Running north on Bline with my daughter at ~10:30 am was verbally harassed by a group of 4 men who appeared to be unhoused gathered by the tables adjacent to Wonderlab garden. Comments were of a sexual nature. It would be appreciated if you could step up patrols in that area. Thank you.
