Traffic Signals

411 Indiana 45 46 Bypass

Case Date:
9/9/2025

The new sensor traffic lights for north/south traffic at the Dunn/Hwy 45 intersection do not sense bicycles. Because the lights differentiate between the left turn and straight lanes, and most traffic is turning left onto the bypass (in both directions) there are often few cars going straight and the straight green light is often not activated - it remains red and only the left turn green lights are activated. Unfortunately there are not good alternative options for bikers, since there are no bike lanes or paths north of the bypass, so bikes must share the driving lanes with cars up to that point. Using the light is the most reasonable approach for cyclists and bike commuters, as there is no other safe access to get to city neighborhoods north of the bypass.

Traffic Signals

Basswood & Bloomfield Rd

Case Date:
3/11/2025

School bus drivers are complaining the light barely stays green long enough to get from Oakdale through the light to Basswood or to turn left. This is my 2nd time putting in this request as I was told this light is maintained by the state and I would need to contact INDOT. I did that and they referred me back to you. Here is the e-mail I received from them regarding this: [email protected] Dear Ms. Silvernail, Thank you for contacting the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). The intersection of W Bloomfield Road and Oakdale Drive/S Basswood Drive is outside of INDOT jurisdiction. Those roads are city streets under the jurisdiction of the City of Bloomington. I understand that you contacted them already, but I can confirm that they are city streets, which INDOT does not maintain. Here is the link to their website: https://bloomington.in.gov/departments/public-works/street and phone number: 812-349-3448. You can stay informed 24/7 by visiting 511in.org or by downloading INDOT TrafficWise in the app store. Spring forward into safety! Buckle Up, Phone Down. The S. Walnut / Miller Drive traffic light isn't working properly after the utility work was done at the intersection last month. The Miller Dr light cycles green when there are no cars and it stays red on S. Walnut for 40 seconds...way too long for no cars on Miller.

Spot lights are poorly timed going both east away from Curry Pike along Third St and mostly west toward Curry Pike. Please fix and make traffic flow more easily along Third St, especially going west. And also especially at Third and Curry going east after 4 p.m.

Traffic Related Complaints

The light at 3rd and Wynnedale creates major traffic problems, bringing all of 3rd street to a standstill constantly. I have seen near misses constantly of people impatiently cutting off each other or stopping in the middle of intersections. The light needs to be fixed to facilitate the flow of traffic safely.
