This ordinance amends Chapter 8.20 of the Bloomington Municipal Code entitled "List of Designated Historic and Conservation Districts" in order to designate "The Kohr Building - the building located at he southeast comer of parcel number 53-08-05-100-058-000-009, located at the comer of West 1st Street and South Rogers Street in the City of Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana" as a historic district. Built in 1947, the Kohr Building still retains its physical integrity, architectural significance, and association with the history of healthcare and medicine in Bloomington. While it was not the first hospital building constructed on the site, it is the oldest surviving building and is therefore a part of the city's healthcare legacy. The building is not listed on the National Register of Historic Places, nor has it been identified in the state or local historic sites and structures inventories so it has not been given a rating; however, this is likely because the building is physically attached to a larger hospital complex that was built in various decades of the late twentieth century which most architectural historians would find "non-contributing". Regardless, the Kohr Building is one of the few examples of Art Deco architecture in Bloomington and stands as a testament to the evolution of the original Bloomington Hospital site from farmhouse to medical complex over the course of the twentieth century.
