Water Quality:

Other: After seeing the water run clear all summer in Jackson Creek (I think that's what runs in front of the Shoppes on College Mall Rd.) this morning the water was very muddy and there was the smell of dead fish. Since there has not been rain recently it seems like something has been dumped in there. Something doesn't seem right about it anyway.

The increase in water volume was due to a water main break that occurred nearby on this date. The "fishy" smell was caused by Geosmin, which is an organic compound that has a distinct aroma. It is also a contributor to the strong scent that occurs in the air when rain falls after a dry spell of weather or when soil is disturbed. Geosmin is also responsible for the earthy taste of beets.
