Line of Sight: Complaint

Original report via email. "To whom this may concern I live in Smallwood Plaza and I have noticed a regular issue and accident waiting to happen in regards to the parking garage on Morton St. When cars are parked behind smallwood, they make it difficult to see oncoming cars both drivers and cyclists leaving smallwoods parking garage. A solution I've thought of is installing a convex mirror to extend line of sight. Thank you for taking the time to read my email. Sincerely, Cody Rosenberg"

Hi Cody, sorry for the delay in responding to this request. After further investigation we've determined that while the sight distance leaving this private driveway is not ideal, it is comparable to other locations in the area on relatively low volume, low speed, urban streets. Crash data in the area indicates that there have been no recorded crashes at this location. I appreciate the suggestion of installing a mirror to improve visibility. Unfortunately, mirrors are generally not a preferred option for a number of reasons. Primary reasons include maintenance of the mirror - they get dirty or broken; functionality of the mirror - they can be covered in dew or snow, glare from the sun can make them unusable, etc; and potential confusion - the parabolic nature of the mirror makes approaching vehicles appear farther away than reality. One potential improvement option would be to restrict multiple parking spaces adjacent to the driveway to ensure parked cars do not restrict visibility. Based on our evaluation, we are not recommending pursuing that option at this point. Thank you for bringing this location to our attention and please feel free to follow up with me for any questions or comments. - Neil
