City of Bloomington, Indiana

closed: Resolved #154111

Traffic Suggestions:

Other: Request for Traffic Calming Devices in Walnut Springs/Grove Neighborhood. Burks Drive between S. Walnut Street and S. Walnut Street Pike is a residential neighborhood that has a high volume of automobile traffic cutting through at high speeds (40+ mph). This creates a hazard for residents in the area that may be pulling out of their driveways, walking (especially the elderly people in the neighborhood), and children playing. Traffic calming devices, such as speed bumps, would cut down on traffic volume and speeds, which would create a safe environment for all.

sorry for such a delayed response here. Please see attached for speed data on Burks Drive. I've summarized some of the high-level info below. For reference, 85th percentile speed refers to the speed at which 85% of all vehicles on the street travel at or below (it's a common metric when discussing speeds on streets). Burks between Walnut Springs and Kennedy Average Speed = 18mph 85th Percentile Speed = 26mph Average Daily Traffic = 1,552 vehicles The speeds we measured are actually pretty low compared with many residential areas. There are, of course, some vehicles travelling faster than desired. Based on this data I expect a traffic calming request here would be low priority compared to other areas, but please follow up with me if you would like to know more about how to continue pursuing traffic calming. It appears the speed limit on Burks is currently posted at 30mph unless the signs have been updated recently. I checked in City code and it looks like the posted speed limit here should technically be 25mph. I can talk to our Public Works Department to see if we can get the signs updated. I wouldn't expect that change to have much, if any, impact on the speed people are driving, but I generally think it'd be a good idea. Thanks for bringing this street to our attention and please feel free to follow up with me for more information,

Hi Angela, Thank you for submitting this uReport with a request for traffic calming in your neighborhood. Our first step in assessing this request will be to gather speed and volume data in the area. We'll need to wait until school is back in session to get the best data (and there are a few other data requests already in the queue) so it will likely be a number of weeks until I follow up with you but please feel free to contact me for an update or with questions/comments. Thanks, - Neil
