Email: Submitted on 11/11/10 by Sonya Thompson sonya727@yahoo.com: My husband and I are members at Twin Lakes Recreation Center. It is very nice, well maintained, and much cleaner under the Park and Rec than as Sportsplex. The equipment is great and each time I have had a questions, I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. That being said, I want to tell you about 11/6/10. My husband went to workout and there was a basketball league or tournament going on late in the afternoon. A group of men were standing directly in front of the doors and had absolutely no consideration about smoking there. I want there on Sunday morning and the entire front walk was strewn with cigarette butts. This is absolutely disgusting! Smoking should not be allowed on the premises and if smokers choose to smoke, they should have to do so in their cars or completely removed from the property. This is a health facility with youth programs and the city should do more to protect the rights of non-smokers and further uphold the strict non-smoking policies of our city. Thank you for your attention to my concerns.

On November 12, Paula McDevitt responded via e-mail: Thank you for your feedback concerning smoking outside the TLRC. Since reading your email this morning I have followed up with a city staff member who works with the Monroe County Smoking Coalition for clarification on distance needed to be maintained for people smoking outside facilities. While there is not a stated distance, they cannot smoke right outside the door and the smoke cannot go into the facility. Having said that we will immediately implement the following: *Posting an official smoking ordinance sticker in the window and stating this is a Smoke Free Establishment. *Facility staff will monitor the situation more closely making it part of their rounds while supervising the facility. Thank you again for your feedback and we are happy you are enjoying the TLRC.
