Dear Mr. and Ms. Lowe, Thank you for your message of appreciation about the safety and civility of our Kirkwood and downtown corridor. This is an issue that continues to quickly evolve, and we are addressing each concern as it arises with respect for both human rights and our laws and statutes regarding public safety. My staff and I are approaching this problem in two ways: we are acting on the short term, immediate issues like public intoxication and aggressive panhandling while at the same time coordinating the efforts of many organizations both internal and external to address the long term causes and remedies for what we are experiencing including drug addiction, untreated mental illness and homelessness. These problems did not arise overnight and they won’t be solved overnight. We want all who choose to spend time in Bloomington to do it free of fear and harassment. We want it to be a safe, civil and just space for all to enjoy. I thank you for your message and anything you can do to contribute the safety, civility and justice of our community. Sincerely, John Hamilton Mayor
