City of Bloomington, Indiana

closed: Resolved #160047

Other:

Other: I have been visiting Bloomington frequently for the last 4 years and have never seen such awful behavior on the streets downtown. We strolled around after dinner and in every block there were people drinking from alcohol containers and dealing and doing drugs, in front of our eyes. Sad state of affairs, especially in Kirkwood and its corners. Not a single patrol car in the area while we were there. I called the police dispatch to let them know and the cop that answer acknowledged there is a problem but sounded indifferent and was kind of rude. Im not a resident but I am surely not coming back to the business in the area, unsafe for the community, its visitors and a threat to the city's youth.

Dear Ms. Gonzalez, Thank you for your message of concern about the safety and civility of our Kirkwood and downtown corridor. I share your concern. This is an issue that continues to quickly evolve, and we are addressing each concern as it arises with respect for both human rights and our laws and statutes regarding public safety. My staff and I are approaching this problem in two ways: we are acting on the short term, immediate issues like public intoxication and aggressive panhandling while at the same time coordinating the efforts of many organizations both internal and external to address the long term causes and remedies for what we are experiencing including drug addiction, untreated mental illness and homelessness. These problems did not arise overnight and they won’t be solved overnight. What would you suggest by way of a solution or set of solutions? Bearing in mind that ideas must be legal, just and feasible, what would you do in my shoes? I believe that great ideas are everywhere and would be happy to entertain yours. It will take all of us, some in small ways and some in big ways, to make Bloomington the community in which we want to live. If you have suggestions, feel free to reach out at mayor@bloomington.in.gov or 812-349-3406. We want all who choose to spend time in Bloomington to do it free of fear and harassment. We want it to be a safe, civil and just space for all to enjoy. I thank you for your concern and anything you can do to contribute the safety, civility and justice of our community. Sincerely, John Hamilton Mayor
