City of Bloomington, Indiana

closed: Resolved #161740

Business:

Other: Abandoned Elevator factory. I would like to see the building be turned into a museum in honor of the many people that worked there building some of the greatest elevators and escalators of all times. One elevator product that may have been built there was the Otis Lexan elevator. I have some friends who film these things and love the Otis Lexan. And now since many of the Otis Lexan elevators are being ripped out, my friends feel quite saddened. So if you can, please see if you can make a museum out of this in honor of one of the best elevators of all time. My friends would love you if you did. IN a way, it would be like a memorial to the Lexan line at Otis elevator company. Greyhound even has service going from St. Louis to Bloomington and the service would bring all sorts of elevator enthusiasts to the museum.

Good morning, and thank you for your note regarding the Otis facility and your idea of the museum. Remembering the great work produced at Otis is a worthy endeavor and we should look for ways to do that. The site itself is under contract for reuse by another manufacturer. I am pasting below an excerpt from the H-T in October regarding the site. I wonder whether the Monroe County history center would house one of the elevators you referenced? EXCERPT: Phoenix Closures request Meanwhile, Phoenix Closures Inc. is looking to expand its operations down the street from Cook by moving into a portion of the former Otis Elevator Co. property at 1331 S. Curry Pike. The facility will become the company’s fifth in the nation and second in Indiana. The Illinois-based company has facilities in Greencastle, Indiana; Davenport, Iowa; Newport, Tennessee; and Naperville, Illinois. The company specializes in injection-molded closures, such as lids for peanut butter and mayonnaise jars. The county council gave final approval for a 10-year traditional tax abatement on real and personal property to help the company establish a facility in Monroe County. Giles Miller, co-president of Phoenix Closures Inc., said the company is projecting $12 million in building renovations and an additional $7 million to be spent on equipment needed for production. Additionally, Miller said the company is conservatively projecting hiring 73 people in the next five years. He said the proposed Bloomington facility is expected to be similar to the one in Greencastle, which currently employees 103. The company is in the process of closing on the 23-acre property currently owned by Saran Industries. In 2016, Saran purchased the larger of two parcels that once housed the Otis Elevator manufacturing line. If the purchase goes through, Phoenix Closures will move its production operations into the facility and lease a portion of the building to Saran. “We are excited to be here,” Miller said. “This is going to be a lot of fun.”
